The wood market is constantly undergoing transformation, which leads to the variation of the price of wood, sometimes significant, from one area to another. In addition, the geographical distribution of forest species and the needs of the woodworking market often make that the wood necessary to be purchased from long distances, so transported over considerable distances and with considerable costs.
Thus, the article aims to analyse the transport distances for wood mass purchased by a woodworking company from Brasov county (Romania), looking in both the purchased volumes and their distribution by species.
From the analysis of the country-wide data, it is found that the wood comes mainly from the counties neighbouring the processing company (Covasna, Dambovita, Harghita, Sibiu), but also from the forest-rich areas (Bistrita Nasaud), beeing correlated with the annual allowable cutting volume of the forests from the area.
By correlating the percentage of purchased wood and the average transport distance, it is found that it depends only in a relatively small proportion (32%) by the transport distance, ie the transport costs, which make that the procurement priorities to be other, such as the required species and the price of wood.
