Forests present up 41.3% of the total area of the Slovak Republic. However, for forest soils no limit values for risky elements are given by the legislation, as it is for agricultural soils.
The aim of this study was to monitor forest soils of 7 regions in Slovakia. Soil samples were collected from 70 sampling sites in 9 selected localities. Environmental risk was evaluated on the basis of total Hg soil content determined by CV-AAS (cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry) method, the background Hg soil content characteristic for investigated region, the calculated value of contamination factor (Cf), the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) as well as the potential index of environmental risk of mercury (E). To more complex evaluate also samples of Boletus edulis Bull. From the same sampling sites were collected. Based on the determined Hg content (in stipe and cap) bioaccumulation factor BFstipe/soil and BFcap/soil were calculated. The lowest average Hg content 0.087±0.012 mg/kg was determined in soil samples from the Hrochot locality (the Podpolanie region), while the highest one 0.594±0.346 mg/kg in samples from the Podolinec locality (the region of Spis). The lowest Cf, E and Igeo values (Cf = 1.16±0.167 ? moderate contamination factor, E = 46.5±6.69 ? moderate risk, Igeo < 0 ? background values) were calculated for soils from Hrochot, too. The highest Cf and E values (Cf = 4.34±2.10 ? considerable contamination factor, E = 173±84 ? considerable ? high risk), were calculated for soils from the Nova Bana locality (the Tekov region), while the highest average Igeo value (2.43±1.14 ? slightly contaminated) was determined for soils from the Podolinec locality. |
