Production of energy carriers that can be conveniently transported and used in the energy, transport, and chemical industry and of materials to be used in chemical synthesis from the available stock of plant biomass and wood is one of the vital tasks enabling the 6th wave of innovation and technology, as biomasses are the natural converters of solar energy into recyclable solid.
George Olah has shown that methanol is a universal product for the large-scale industrial production of necessary energy carriers and chemical feedstock, from which hydrogen, ethanol, ethylene, and other direct-use products can then be obtained.
However, production of methanol from wood requires significant energy costs that absorb a portion of feedstock.
This paper presents a way of solving this problem by using a direct-flow gas generator to obtain syngas which is then fed to a copper catalyst where methanol is formed from H2, CO, and CO2 by exothermic reactions. The necessary thermal energy for the process is provided by burning the 0.68 portion of the obtained syngas in a fluidized bed where a spiral-shaped tubular direct-flow gas generator is located. The process temperature is 700 °C. Rotary feeders are used to charge sawdust and discharge ash. The complex can produce 23 MT per day. 1 kg of wood yields 0,268 kg of methanol. The (gross) thermal efficiency of methanol production from wood is 52.4%.
