In this work, the high-bog peat was used for the production of monosaccharide as a biofuel source. As it is known, peat is one of the renewable energy sources which is widespread in the Central Region of the Russian Federation. Paet contains over 40% of such polysaccharides like cellulose and hemicelluloses. The study of the peat pretreatment methods for further hydrolysis is the main task for chemical and biotechnology. In the current work, the effectiveness of the ultrasonic pretreatment of the high-bog peat for its further use as a substrate for the enzymatic production of monosaccharides is shown. It was found that the ultrasonic treatment of peat increases the yield of monosaccharides up to 0.65% for D-glucose and up to 0.42% for xylose (at T=60 °C, 37 kHz, t=90 min). As a result of the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated peat samples, the yield of D-glucose increased up to 6% odb. The obtained dependence of the enzymatic activity on pH was a dome-shaped curve with a maximum at pH 5.0-5.5. The paper shows that in terms of the content and quality of carbohydrates, peat is a suitable feedstock for chemical and biochemical processing. The resulting hexose sugars can effectively be further fermented by microorganisms to bioethanol.
