Several research projects of the Department of transportation engineering dealt with the issue of recycling and reuse of various materials into the pavement structure. By recycling and reuse of road construction materials, material and natural resources savings, environmental protection and energy savings were followed. The mixture with reclaimed material, most often reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), is of sufficient quality for the new road construction layer and can also affect the resistance to permanent deformation of the cover. As in many other countries, hot recycling technology is still the most used in Slovakia. From the available amount of recycled material (R-material), approximately 50,000 tons are used to produce Hot and Warm mix asphalt. Only 2 % is used for cold recycling and 1 % for unbound road layers. From the point of view of the use of the recycled material and its recommended amount to a particular pavement structure layer, there is a tendency to return to the higher dosage (> 10 % in the surface course; > 20 % in binder-, base- and leveling course). Application of recycling technologies is also adapted to the area of legislation. This is mainly due to long-term experience, machinery, but also due to the lack of interest to switch to new, more modern technological processes. The economic aspect of the matter is always an integral part.
The paper deals with the possibilities of using available R-material within the pavement structure, the results of research projects and experience in practice in Slovakia. |
