One of the most important alternatives in sewage sludge ash management is the recovery of essential elements such as phosphorus. Phosphorus is an important element for plants, food supply, human health and industry. Phosphorus is a non-regenerative resource and therefore it is important to find alternative sources to recover phosphorus. Phosphorus recovery as struvite (NH4MgPO4.6H2O) from sewage sludge ash has attracted special attention in the last decade due to the potential to be used as an ecologic fertilizer.
The aim of this paper is the recovery as struvite of phosphorus from sewage sludge ash resulted after the sewage sludge calcination. The phosphorus extraction from sewage sludge ash was performed with 5% sulfuric acid at a liquid:solid ratio of 5:1. The chemical composition of the extracted solution was found as follows: 8.12 g P/L, 2.08 g Mg/L, 1.09 g Ca/L and 2.3 g Al/L. The precipitation process was studied for N:P ratio of 1:2, at two values of the Mg:P ratio (1.2 and 1.8) and four values of pH ranging between 8.5 and 10.
