The geotechnical characteristics of rocks influence their behavior in terms of their strength and stability. Changing the geotechnical characteristics of the rocks is the direct cause of the loss of the natural balance of the slope when the resistance forces defeated by the sliding forces. Influence factors, which may be of geological, hydrogeological, hydrometeorological, climatic, seismic, biotic, anthropic, mechanical or geomechanical nature and occur in time and space on rock massifs/deposits, determines the change of geotechnical characteristics of the rocks. Based on factors that influence the occurrence of geotechnical phenomena, their causes can be investigated. Among the causes of geotechnical phenomena are the action of water, the presence of overloads, processes of freeze-thaw, disaggregation, alteration, seismic shocks and vibrations, etc. In the case of waste rocks, the values of the geotechnical characteristics change considerably, in the sense of their worsening, as a result of extraction, transport and deposition processes. Therefore, unlike in-situ rocks, in natural, undisturbed condition, the waste rocks are in a weak state, their resistance structure being destroyed. So, from a stability point of view, bigger problems raise the dump slopes.
The paper is part of a comprehensive study and presents the sampling and laboratory testing steps to determine the geotechnical characteristics of the rocks from the definitive slopes of the remaining gap of the North Pesteana quarry required in the stability studies and concludes with an assessment of the stability of the final slopes of the remaining gap.
