Human losses in Europe are mostly associated with meteorological and climatological hazards such as heat waves, heavy precipitation, river floods, windstorms and landslides. Economic losses are most significant for the industry, transport and energy sectors. Highest economic losses and annual numbers of affected people are caused mainly by geophysical and hydrological disasters.
Landslides are natural hazards that cause fatalities and significant economic losses in various parts of Europe. Heavy precipitation events combined with geological, morphological, physical and human factors are most common triggers of landslides in Europe. The average economic loss per year in Europe, only due to landslides, is approximately 4.7 billion Euros. Changes in precipitation and projected increases in temperature can affect ground stability conditions in cities worldwide. Monitoring of landslides, land subsidence and structural collapses has been marked by the new perspective thanks to the Europe?s Copernicus programme Sentinel-1 radar satellites. Sentinel-1 enables operational monitoring of structures threatened by different deformation processes effectively and simultaneously over large areas at low cost merit. This study is focused on exploiting possibilities of more detailed and frequent surveillance of infrastructure damage and improving safety conditions for citizens by identifying and prioritizing structures requiring field inspection or better surveillance. |
