In this research we investigate the significance of the CGAL library which is a source of algorithms related to computational geometry. We briefly describe the exact computation paradigm that provides obtaining reliable geometrical results. We present the advantages of using the CGAL library in terms of investigating certain parameters of geological planar structures. We show that several parameters that can be computed and attributed to considered planes and subsequent use of further statistical methods becomes possible. These planes usually are part of a greater surface that can be investigated in specific problems. We compare the suggested solutions to those implemented in certain GIS programs and environments for data analysis. The advantage of our approach is stressed in terms of speed and creating different models related to structural geology. These structural models can be associated with computing the orientation of geological surfaces or measuring the similarity (equivalently dissimilarity) of the orientation between these surfaces. The conclusion of the study includes discussion on measurement errors that can arise when computing specific attributes.
