Despite preventive measures, it is not possible to fully eliminate natural disasters, damages and other undesired events. These may have such negative impacts that might turn into a crisis situation. Provided the crisis situation occurs, it is necessary to have an effective system and tools of crisis management. The activity of crisis management represents the solution to the crisis situation using specific principles, procedures and methods aiming at overcoming or minimizing the negative impacts and renewing particular systems. The most important executive tool of crisis management is the integrated rescue system. Voluntary municipal fire brigades represent one of the IRS elements. As part of the strategy of full-area arrangement of forces and means and using the project called Active Flood Protection, over 1000 municipalities in the Slovak Republic were given a flood protection vehicle from 2012 to 2019. The contribution refers to the preparation, activity, current possibilities and importance of VFB when dealing with undesired events focusing on flood protection in the basin of the Hornad River.
