The aim of the article was to assess the content and enrichment of selected ecotoxic elements (As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, Sn, Zn) and Fe in the fly ash and slag after coal combustion in relation to content in feed coal, and moreover content and enrichment of elements in the topsoil and in the common beech roots (growing in the vicinity of the power plant) in relative to the topsoil levels and common beech roots in local and reference background.
It was found that fly ash particles of <0.05 mm have a large enrichment factor for coal feed (from 4.0 for As and Sn to 788 for Bi). In the Oe and Oa subhorizons, the highest content of elements in the topsoil in the vicinity of the power plant was found. In E soil horizon (for Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn), Ah horizon (As, Cd), Oa (Sn) and Oi soil subhorizon (Bi, Sb) in the vicinity of the power plant, and in the Ah soil horizon (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Sn, Zn), Oa (Bi) and Oi soil subhorizon (Sb) in the further vicinity of the plant was found the largest enrichment of elements against the local background. The content of elements in the roots of common beech growing in the vicinity of the power plant is generally larger (from 2.2 for Cu to 146.5 for Cd) than in the beech roots in the local background. The increase in the content of Cd, Cu, Sb, Sn and Zn in soil and beech roots in the vicinity of the power plant compared to the local background is simultaneous and proportional, and the content of As, Bi, Fe and Pb is non-simultaneous.
The above trends may facilitate the identification of places and forecasting degree of soil pollution in the vicinity of power plants that coal combustions.
