One of the goals of our research was the evaluation of quantitative and qualitative properties of the Fe oxyhydroxides emerging from mine waters.
Another one of the main goals of this research was the effectiveness comparison between natural and supported attenuation used as a remediation method for the removal of potentially toxic metals and metalloids from mining waters occurring on sites with sulfidic mineralization. Samples for this research were taken from abandoned mineral deposit of sulfide ores in the locality Pezinok. These abandoned deposits pose a danger to the environment in the form of increased concentrations of some potentially toxic elements (especially Sb) in waters flowing out of the abandoned adits. We managed to prove, that natural attenuation is also an effective remediation method for mining waters contaminated by potentially toxic elements but supported attenuation (by aeration) is significantly more effective considering the amount of precipitating solids ? Fe oxyhydroxides.
