Nowadays, the demands on urban intelligence and the protection of their inhabitants vary widely. This is due to technical progress (especially in information technology) and the possible dangers to which the population must be protected. The potential danger is caused by natural influences, human activity and also accidents. With population growth and urban migration, it is difficult for cities to be a quality and safe place to live. Smart City is one of the concepts applying the principles of sustainable development into the city organization, which relies on the use of modern technology to improve the quality of life and make city governance more effective. The broadest application of this concept can be found in the fields of energy, transport and information and communication technologies (ICT). Smart City concept, however, includes not only the above mentioned areas, it can be applied to other sectors, too, e.g. water management, waste management, e-government, emergency management and civil protection. Smart City also makes it possible to increase the safety of the population, its awareness and to ensure faster urgent first aid. The aim of the article is to outline suggestions for increasing the level of civil protection through Smart City in a given area or city, in various sectors related to the daily life of the population. To create these designs, available documents related to the issue of Smart city were analysed.
