Metropolises are undoubtedly associated with large and significant areas. These areas are important in case of technical, social, cultural and industrial terms. However, it is difficult to name metropolises as ?cities? in the traditional sense of this word. In our socio-cultural reality, from individuals, objects, companies, which are "larger", "older" or "more developed" and "more mature", more is required. On the example of the Silesian metropolis, the author shows interdependencies taking place in the institutional sphere, as well as socio-cultural sphere. Those interdependencies are related to the choice of a specific hierarchy of values, which are adequate and characteristic especially for the metropolitan areas, influencing at the same time spatial realizations and their conditions. Moreover, commonly met phenomena for the metropolis are the presence of metropolitan functions, migration of the population and transfer of economic activity to the peripheries of the existing urban centers. The occurrence of a metropolis is a prerequisite for the creation of a metropolitan area and the process of metropolization of the surrounding space. There is no uniform opinion in the literature about the definition of metropolitan functions. They are often understood as a synonym for all metropolitan functions. It is also difficult to clearly and definitively determine which functions create the metropolitanity of the city.
