The article examines the Russian chemical industry in respect of the problems and prospects for the implementation of the state strategic objectives in the field of innovative development. The external and internal conditions for the scientific and technological development of the Russian chemical industry are identified. The main promising areas for the transformation of the Russian chemical industry aimed at boosting the country?s competitiveness are determined. Considered the terms and conditions for the development of new technologies of raw materials processing and finished products manufacturing. To achieve the innovative breakthrough in the chemical industry, it is necessary to adopt digital data collection and processing methods, particularly big data technology and complex mathematical modeling of studied processes, as well as conducting fundamental experimentation in chemistry. The development of a competitive environment should be accompanied by the introduction of mutually beneficial forms of interfirm cooperation and the concentration of industrial production and capital in various fields, including scientific research. Furthermore, it is highly relevant to develop computer and spin chemistry, nanochemistry and femtochemistry, as well as single-molecule chemistry. It is also important to focus on the development of domestic technologies required to create the innovative types of chemical products with high added value. Structural changes in the chemical industry should be based on the superior development of the knowledge intensive low-tonnage chemical production. All these actions are necessary to be supported by a well-defined state industrial policy regulating the innovative activity of industrial enterprises and innovation centers at the top universities in Russia.
