Foresight has been on the political and research agenda already for decades, nevertheless there is still no common understanding up to which extent application of strategic foresight impacts environmental sustainability. This is also not sufficiently explored in the body of literature within the research community. Thus, the study aims to contribute to the identified gap by developing a framework for application of the strategic foresight for ensuring environmental sustainability in policy decision making. The study revealed that application of strategic foresight requires strong presence of managerial dynamic managerial capabilities by decision makers. This is because the growing environmental challenges require smart actions from policy makers demonstrating strong leadership. To develop a framework for the application of the strategic foresight, the narrative scientific literature review was performed together with the application of the content analysis focusing on strategic foresight in the environmental context. The findings were supported by applying the secondary data analysis which was executed through governmental and regional perspectives. The governmental perspective viewed the environmental policy and decision-making processes and practices in Latvia, whereas regional perspective allowed to compare these data to top 5 European countries: Sweden, Malta, France, Switzerland and Denmark according to Environmental Performance Index. The success of the application of strategic foresight towards ensuring environmental sustainability is directly linked to the strategic foresight maturity levels ? the higher the level of strategic foresight, the higher level of positive impact on environmental sustainability. Higher levels of strategic foresight require presence of higher level of managerial dynamic capabilities by policy decision makers thus leading to the advancements in ensuring environmental sustainability. The article provides an additional contribution to the discussion about the impact of strategic foresight application for ensuring environmental sustainability. The proposed framework can be applied in environmental policy decision-making thus addressing the environmental challenges.
