Atmospheric air is the primary component used in air separation plants. Wet air is a mixture of dry air particles and vaporous water particles, a mixture in which the components do not chemically interact and are thought to be approximately perfect gases. Atmospheric air to be processed in a separation unit needs to be cleaned of all impurities that can cause damages in the main components of the plant. The hazardous impurities that can be found in the atmospheric air used to generate oxygen, nitrogen and rare gases include water, carbon dioxide, acetylene, which is the most dangerous, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, hydrocarbons in general, nitrogen oxides, especially nitrous oxide, and even acetone. In air separation plants, regenerators have the same role as heat exchangers, serving to cool the air flow entering the separator block. Regenerators also have the role of purifying the air passing through them, eliminating the humidity, and the carbon dioxide that freezes on the regenerator filler.
This paper is intended to assess the existing technology in the field of air purification by cooling and dehumidification, before using atmospheric air in separation plants and evaluate the future possibilities to optimize these key components. |
