In this paper we describe the synthesis and characterization of nano-sized TiO2 particles supported on sepiolite fibres with sepiolite to TiO2 weight ratios of 30:70, using sepiolite from Korinthos, Greece. Sepiolite - TiO2 nanocomposites were prepared by deposition of anatase form of TiO2 on the sepiolite surfaces using a sol?gel method with titanium isopropoxide as a precursor under hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C. The characterization includes phase composition, particle morphology, while the physical properties of the samples were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Attenuated Total Reflection using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and N2 specific surface area (SSA) analysis by BET. Preparation of Sepiolite?TiO2 nanocomposites led to good dispersion of 4-10 nm TiO2 particles on sepiolite surfaces. ATR-FTIR results showed that sepiolite?s structure was not affected by the hydrothermal treatment. After compositing with TiO2 sepiolite sample largely showed interparticle mesopores of about 7.25 nm. Furthermore, the photocatalytic performance of the sepiolite - TiO2 nanocomposite samples showed enhanced activity to the decoloration of an azo dye (Basic Blue) in water compared with conventional nano-powder of TiO2 (Degussa P25) mainly due to enhanced structural properties of the composite photocatalyst.
