According to studies, the construction sector is one of the biggest energy consuming and waste producing sectors in Europe. It faces the most pressing need to use advanced digital solutions for enabling eco-innovations to mitigate the environmental impact. For creating a favourable business environment by facilitating the use of state-of-the-art technologies that also are enabling eco-innovations, the Digital Business Ecosystem (DBE) should be developed. The aim of the research is to provide insight into the development of the DBE and its role in delivering eco-innovation in the construction sector in general and in Latvia in particular. To achieve the aim of the present research study 1) the latest scientific literature review was performed, 2) a secondary data analysis was applied to reveal the essence of Building Information Modelling (BIM) solutions as a central part of the DBE in the construction sector to evaluate its role in delivering eco-innovation, and 3) the results of the survey on the use of BIM in the construction sector were analysed. The results of the research show that the concept of the DBE is relatively new and assumes integration of three networks: ICT, social and knowledge networks. The DBE in the context of eco-innovation has not been extensively studied in the scientific literature, although both concepts refer to socio-economic sustainability. The survey data show that the development of the DBE in the construction sector is in its initial stage in Latvia, thus requiring close attention by policymakers to the enablers of its further development, such as widespread digital skills, education, digital infrastructures etc., to unlock the full eco-innovation potential in the construction sector.
