Cave rescue operations are difficult and very complex. One of the most important
factors that affect the effectiveness of cave rescue operations is pre-planning. 3D modelling of caves provides new opportunities for it. Terrestrial laser scanning was used to create 3D model of Diabla Dziura in Bukowiec Cave. Three types of stretchers, used by local Mountain Rescue Service, were measured and scanned. The analysis consisted in a virtual ?transport of the patient? in a 3D model of the cave. Using this method, zones where there were no problems with transport were identified, as well as places where stretchers cannot pass and it is necessary to use other ways to transport the patient. As a result, four zones of accessibility of the cave for different types of stretchers were identified. The amount of 3D data collected by the caver for research or documentation purposes is increasing quickly. Elaboration of methods that will enable using this data for cave rescue purposes appears to be very desirable. Laser scanning point cloud could be useful tool for planning rescue operations and, consequently, increase their effectiveness. |
