The composting process, together with methane fermentation and agricultural use as a fertilizer, is one of the most popular methods of sewage sludge management. As a result of a properly carried out process, obtained compost has a very high fertilizer value, mainly due to the high nitrogen content and a wide range of macro- and microelements.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of composted sewage sludge temperature (with the addition of structural material) on CO2 emission and the dynamics of the process. The test results showed that with a flow in the range of 3-4 L/min, it was possible to obtain a very dynamic thermophilic phase with a temperature above 70oC after just 2 days of the process. At the highest increase in composted sewage sludge temperature during the thermophilic phase (over 70oC), a strong increase in CO2 emissions was noted. The experiments containing sewage sludge and straw composting with addition of corn starch in different states (natural state and shredded) showed that corn starch presence has positive effect on process dynamic. |
