Up until the invention of electronic distance measuring devices, in geodetic networks observations were made on the tracks (directions) between points, while the distance was measured only between the points representing the base (or the bases - in the case of the constrained networks).
Even after the development of these tools, for a good period of time, we continued with observations on the directions given the size of the instruments and the cumbersome methods of making observations to determine the distances.
With the modernization of technology and the development of the total station, the observations regarding distances became more and more accessible; the processing of observations, when completed without specialized programs, seems at least problematic.
This paper presents the protocol of processing observations of distances using the indirect measurement method in comparison to the processing of observations using the Solver module attached to the Microsoft Excel program.
The processing methods presented are accessible and offer the possibility of making calculations and creating resolving templates, should the situation arise that we do not have a specialized processing program.
