Discontinuity of rocks under uniaxial compression may be accompanied by a cleavage of one part relative to the other. Such a phenomenon is also observed in laboratory testing experiments. The cleavage area is geometrically an uneven rough surface. In modern practice, the level of roughness is usually characterized using the Barton-Choubey scale, where the visual profile of the discontinuity is correlated to the corresponding value of the joint roughness coefficient (JRC), varying in the range from 0 to 20. But in addition to the visible external profile, there is an internal set of profiles that is revealed after the sample breaks because of the applied load. Due to the modern object recognition devices and the appropriate computer-aided applications, it is possible to take into account the invisible part of the profile where the failure occurred. And thus it can be refined the joint roughness coefficient, based on data from the entire failure surface. This paper presents demonstrative results of calculating the roughness coefficient for a joint rock samples depending on the spatial position of the discontinuity profile in the direction of applied uniaxial load. To obtain these results, the surfaces of each part of the tested rock sample were scanned. After additional software processing, the surfaces were sliced into multiple profiles in the direction of load application. Depending on the slice, the JRC coefficient was calculated for each profile, and then the mean JRC value was obtained over the entire surface.
