Eastern sedimentary basins in terms of oil and gas bearing in particular the Balkhash from the point of view of oil and gas content is considered for the first time. The results presented are obtained on the basis of an analysis of the consideration of the paleogeographic conditions of the formation of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic formations. The lithological composition of the sediments of the Balkhash depression is given in detail. The role of paleogeographic environments as one of the factors influencing the formation of favorable geochemical reducing conditions for the formation and generation of hydrocarbon compounds of oil and gas is revealed and substantiated. In the southern part of the Balkhash depression, a thrust zone has been identified, under which oil and gas promising for discovering deposits of commercial importance may be buried.
In the section of the sedimentary cover of the Balkhash depression, according to geophysical data from gravity and magnetic prospecting, rift structures, mainly composed of Paleozoic formations, were revealed at a depth of up to 6000 m. Sediments of rift zones do not contradict the discovery of oil and gas bearing strata in their composition, which is confirmed by the discovery of oil and gas deposits in such rift zones.
