The environmental problems of developing solid mineral deposits are largely associated with the need to store waste from mineral mining and processing. Such wastes occupy tens of thousands of hectares and are a source of pollution of atmospheric air, soil, surface and groundwater as a result of wind and water erosion. Large areas of stored waste determine the reasonability of using remote observation methods for assessing their conditions in order to make informed decisions aimed at improving the ecological state of the territory and restoring the integrity of natural landscapes. The vegetation index is a widely used parameter of the radiation reflected by the Earth?s surface, characterizing its photosynthetic ability. At the same time, the correctness of its values calculated from satellite observations for the surface of ore processing waste storage facilities with a relief other than plain requires clarification.
The authors have substantiated a methodical approach to satellite data driven study the relief impact on the assessment of the stored ore processing waste state. The Landsat images have shown the preference of determining the vegetation index on the descending paths of the satellite trajectory in the specified range of inclination angles of the underlying surface, such as it provides an acceptable error in studying the state of the vegetation cover. The vegetation cover is created on the protective dam of the stockpiled ore processing waste in order to stop its wind and water erosion, increase the stability of a hydraulic structure and improve the ecological condition of the territory. The paper presents a time series of the vegetation index of the vegetation cover which characterizes the dynamics of natural ecosystem restoration. The vegetation cover was created by the technology of sod formation without applying the topsoil layer developed at the Mining Institute KSC RAS. |
