Building stone quarrying companies in the Republic of Karelia commonly have limited information on the geological structure of a deposit. They do not have their own geological survey, and this type of service is not yet properly offered in Karelia. When product quality problems arise, it is difficult to rapidly find the correct solution. The quality of raw materials at any quarrying stage can be analyzed using GIS applications at the initial stage of quarrying in order to collect and systematize information on the quality of the raw materials. Collecting and classifying information on the geological structure of the deposit to be quarried, controlling the quality of the initial rock and the finished product, compiling quality maps and constructing the geological column of the deposit are done to assess the quality of rocks from any part of the deposit, to plan a production process and to control finished product quality. Fracturing maps are compiled and macro- and mega-fracture density diagrams are constructed to provide more information for analysis. A dolerite quarry for aggregate production is used here as an example to show how information on initial rock and finished product quality can be collected, systematized and analyzed during quarrying and aggregate production.
