Paper presents usage of viscoelastic material in the body of turning tool holder in order to damp the vibrations in the turning process. The standard approach to designing is the strength and stiffness based designing resulting from static material properties. However, each dynamically loaded structure is the subject of vibrations. Thus the dynamic material properties (damping measures) are of equal importance as vibrations are a part of the machines and devices performance. Their occurrence cannot be prevented because vibrations arise in a natural physicomechanical process resulting from the nature of the materials as elastic bodies and machine-tool structure. In general, the presence of unwanted vibrations forces us to modify the cutting conditions, which, however, lead to a reduction in cutting force, torque and power and thus productivity. To avoid this standard approach, it is preferable to use damping devices based on either specific design and shape (passive damping) or specific electro-rheological fluid (semi-active damping) or active damping using magnetic bearings, piezo-actuators etc. The paper focuses on passive damping using the non-conventional application of thin layer/s of viscoelastic material in the body of the tool holder. The presence of viscoelastic material changes the response of cutting tool-workpiece subsystem which is reflected in the character of vibrations and higher quality of the machined surface. Moreover, the paper provides results, discussion and benefits of that experiment and a possible application.
