One of the most important parameters of pavement serviceability in terms of view road safety is without doubt skid resistance. By now, a number of different methods and devices have been developed for both friction and texture evaluation. However, while measurements of friction coefficients tend to be subject to a large number of boundary conditions, texture measurements are affected by device limits without the possibility of detecting surface irregularities at the microtexture level, which appears to be crucial in ensuring a high level of friction. The article deals with the testing of a new device developed to measure the pavement surface texture with a high-resolution and with the aim of predicting friction only on the base of results of surface morphology contactless sensing. This new device is able to record surface irregularities with a resolution of up to 2.49 ?m and using the created algorithm it is possible to evaluate, in addition to standard texture amplitude characteristics, also parameters evaluating the shape and distribution of surface irregularities. The paper describes the method of measurement by the device and experimental verification of the influence of different boundary conditions on the measurement results on reference surfaces with known parameters. Within experimental measurements with new equipment, measurements were performed on specimens with different compositions of asphalt mixture in terms of grain size and type of aggregate. On all surfaces were performed measurements of the Pendulum friction coefficient, as well. Based on the correlations between the texture characteristics and the coefficient of friction, was assessed the measure of the ability of the new device to predict the pavement skid resistance on the basis of texture measurements only.
