Bicycle transport is usually perceived as environmentally friendly alternative of car transport. From the point-of-view of everyday mobility, the bicycle is relatively fast, inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport, which helps people to overcome the dependence on the car. For this reason, promoting cycling is one of the key concepts of sustainable mobility, which influences the creation of mobility management plans in recent decades. However, not everything is so bright. This article reveals that preferences of cycling infrastructure users and actions of officials and politicians are sometimes far from principles of sustainable development. It is based on data from the Czech Republic, where two large surveys and one qualitative study were implemented during the years 2014 ? 2019. These data describe (a) the preferences of cyclists as a target group, (b) the priorities of politicians and officials influencing the construction of cycle paths, and (c) the experience of professionals involved in the construction of cycle paths themselves. Combining quantitative and qualitative data from three different sources makes it easy to get to know the everyday reality of building bicycle paths in the Czech Republic as a country where cycling infrastructure development is very slow and each section of a new trail is often very expensive. The paper draws attention to some thoughtless and populist steps that led to the unnecessary occupation of land in greenfield and describes the reasons for this approach. On the other hand, the paper gives recommendations on how to develop cycling infrastructure sparingly and with respect to the environment.
