The identification technique of hazardous clouds using infrared spectrometry is based on the spectral analysis of electromagnetic radiation that is absorbed and emitted by the molecules of a gas cloud. Molecules can be identified by analyzing the location of lines inside the spectrum, representing the energy differences between the cases involved and the strength of the lines, which is the probability of a photon being absorbed or emitted.
This method is often called passive infrared spectrometry because no artificial radiation sources are used. Inside the radiation measured by the spectrometer include the spectral signatures of the background and the signatures of the molecules of the cloud and the atmosphere between the background and the spectrometer. The background represents the area from which the radiation is detected that is beyond the cloud. Topographic targets such as house walls or vegetation, as well as the sky can form the background of a measurement. The present paper work presents an infrared scanning spectrometer in which imaging is achieved by combining a Fourier spectrometer with a single element detector with a scanning system to scan an area also called field of regard.
This combination enables an imaging system that has the good spectral properties of a single detector Fourier spectrometer, such as high signal to noise ration achievable. The goal of an imaging scanning spectrometer system is to identify, quantify and visualize the hazardous clouds from a safe distance with high selectivity and low detection limits.
