The paper is devoted to the problem of lack of commonly used and well-tested algorithm for numerical modeling of response of porous water-saturated soil deposits to vertical ground motions from earthquakes. Numerical simulation of soil response is necessarily carried out for horizontal and vertical ground motions as part of the seismic hazard assessment of construction sites of important structures such as nuclear power plants and oil platforms due to their potential vulnerability and high environmental hazard. The influence of soil deposits on vertical component of seismic waves has been studied much less than in the case of horizontal components. The vertical component of ground motions consists of P-waves and the vertical component of SV waves in the generalized case of non-vertical incidence of the wave front on the basement of soil layers. We used NERA-based algorithm to calculate spectra and accelerograms on free surface during SH-wave propagation through soil columns. Then, the average surface spectrum of the two horizontal components is multiplied by the V/H ratio to obtain low-frequency contribution to the target spectrum. The adapted NERA-based algorithm was used for modeling P-waves spectra and accelerograms according to in order to obtain high-frequency contribution to the target spectrum. We conducted case-study for modeling vertical ground motions on the surface of the soil columns with generalized parameters derived from the real engineering works. The form of the obtained spectral envelope showed that the P-wave spectrum is shifted to the high-frequency band relative to the spectrum for SV-waves, this corresponds to the observed data.
