For the tests a coal seam no. 209 of the Piast-Ziemowit coal mine has been selected, which is located in the south-eastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). The basic material of the study was the results of laboratory analysis of sulfur and ash content from the furrow samples taken in the mining excavations of the coal seam no. 209 Piast-Ziemowit coal mine.
The main objective of the research was to analyze the structure of variability of sulfur and ash content in hard coal using statistical and geostatistical methods. The statistical description included the calculation of basic statistical measures and the construction of frame-whiskers. These studies have shown that the analyzed quality parameters of coal are characterized by average variability, and their distributions are right-hand asymmetric. The conducted research on the selection of theoretical distributions to the empirical distributions of the analyzed parameters made it possible to calculate the probability of occurrence of the values of analyzed parameters for commonly used criteria when exporting Polish bituminous coal to European Union (EU) countries. It was found on their basis that in the case of sulfur and ash content in the seam no. 209 of the Piast-Ziemowit coal mine, there is a high probability of 50 to 93% of occurrence of content meeting the requirements for the export of steam coal to European Union countries.
The non-uniformity of distribution of sulfur and ash content has been demonstrated using the Games-Howell multiple comparison test. This proves the clear diversification of seam no. 209 in the field of research. There is no possibility to determine one homogeneous group for both parameters.
As part of the geostatistical analysis, relative semivariograms were calculated, which showed a significantly higher level of variation in the ash content than the sulfur content in the analyzed sub-areas.
