In this paper we emphasized the main standards with major impact in managing geospatial information in present, focusing on their importance on spatial data infrastructures. A proven importance of standards is to ensure the interoperability. The interoperability can be seen as the ability to link datasets and related services of different types and from different sources in order to minimize costs, redundance and possible problems. There are two main categories of geospatial standards: information standards and technology standards. Given the interoperability levels, there are three maturity categories for geospatial data infrastructures, plus Web of data. There are also highlighted the new areas for development of standards like IoT (Internet of Things), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Big Data and Big Science. It is mentioned also a new approach, the Academic SDI, which is a SDI for research and education purposes, used as a common data exchange platform for the researchers, in the purpose to upload, search, and download data.
