Due to the flow behavior complexity, the calculation of local head losses needs to be based on experimental results. Although there is great literature regarding the study of valves, and a part of it contains detailed results of local head loss too, these values are always related to a specific manufacturer. This means that for accurate design it is recommended to know the specific head loss exactly for the used device. In the present paper the conception and building of an experimental stand for measurement of local head losses for different type of valves will be presented. Special attention is paid to the issues regarding accuracy of measurement considering all flow conditions (e.g. laminar, turbulent and transitional flow). Recommended equipment is described, as well as a method to determine the correct place for connecting the differential pressure meter. To get a correct evaluation of the local head loss produced by the studied object, the averaged pressure in the characteristic measure cross sections will be determined using four-point measurements.
