Permeable pavements are among the most diffused Low Impact Development techniques (LID). Several studies have confirmed the optimal performance of permeable pavements in terms of peak reduction and water retention. Furthermore, permeable pavements have proven to reduce pollutant load in runoff water. Although the benefits are evident, the transition from traditional urban drainage systems to the sustainable ones is very slow. The lack of accurate modelling tools represents a key limiting factor in the diffusion of such systems, especially among practitioners. The complexity in the hydraulic modelling of permeable pavement is mainly due to its strong unsaturated behaviour.
In this study, a conceptual model is proposed for the hydraulic modelling of permeable pavements. The model is based on reservoir elements, which are already present several hydrologic-hydraulic software. The permeable pavement is modelled as a cascade of reservoirs. Each layer of the pervious pavement is modelled as a reservoir with a specific discharge rate. In this study, the proposed model is calibrated and validated against measured discharges of a pervious pavement installed at the University of Calabria. Several statistical indices have been used in order to assess the accuracy of the model in correctly describe the hydraulic behaviour of a permeable pavement. Results confirm the suitability of the proposed model. |
