The main objective of this paper was to assess the water quality in Siret, in the Galati area. Galati is a port town on the Danube River in south-eastern of Romania. For the purpose of carrying out these studies, water samples from ten Siret sites were taken. Water quality has been monitored between November 2016 and December 2017. Physical and chemical characteristics of water were performed. The PFP7 Flam Photometer was used for potassium and calcium ions determination. An UV-VIS Specord 210 Spectrophotometer was used to determine the following indicators: nitrites, nitrates, chlorides, total phosphorus, sulphates, cadmium, lead, iron and zinc. Other physical and chemical parameters were also studied such as: density, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand (CCO-Cr) and biochemical oxygen demand (CBO5), electrical conductivity, the density of the conductivity, resistivity, pH, salinity, total dissolved solids an turbidity. The assessed indicators exceeded the maximum admissible values especially between November 2016 and June 2017.Since September 2017, the assessed parameters have improved due to the measures taken by the Romanian authorities. Weighted Arithmetic Water Quality Index Method was used for water quality index calculation.
