Marine pollution with mineral oils has become a major problem due to the negative impact on the marine ecosystem. This threat is mainly caused by maritime transport which discharge the poly aromatic hydrocarbons known as polluting products into the sea through the bilge waters, or through cleaning operations of cargo tanks of chemical and petrochemical vessels, as well as because of naval accidents. Due to the high risks caused by the oil pollution, International Maritime Organization adopted Marpol 73/78, a specific marine legislative framework in order to prevent and to control such pollution. According to Marpol 73/78 revised in 2014, it is necessary to develop new eco-friendly and biodegradable materials, whithout negative effects on the environment. The eggs capsules of the R. venosa, represent a waste obtained after harvesting and cleaning the snails destined to consumption. At the same time, their use does not produce negative impact on the marine ecosystem. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate through preliminary studies the cleaning capacity of Rapana venosa eggs capsules which has been tested for different sea conditions for pollutant removal by simulating in laboratory a marine pollution with petroleum products (crude oil). The adsorption and cleaning capacities of the capsules were compared with those of Spill Sorb, a natural material, currently in use. The results revealed that Rapana venosa eggs capsules present good adsorption properties in specific marine conditions.
