The purpose of this paper is to present traditional building concepts from the local seismic culture, with a seismically resilient typology: from timber structures to framed wall structures, timber frame structure with infilling materials etc. The structural shortcomings of masonry structural systems with one or two storey, which were observed at the incidence of intermediate Vrancea earthquake from the past, will be emphasized: some architectural and constructive elements that impose a good/poor behavior and types of failure mechanisms and damage.
On the other hand, the seismic vulnerability of these masonry dwellings may be reduced through the increasing of strength and rigidity by reinforcement or confinement, using the knowledge from the recent state-of-the-art research studies. In order to support the provisions of Romanian codes, some modern manufacturing technologies have produced a lot of new composite building materials. Thus, strengtheningof the masonry walls by reinforcing with carbon fiber plates and with carbon fiber fabric over the carbon fiber plates will be discussed. Also about some details related to the timber connections and to the vulnerability characterization of non-engineered construction systems using quantitative indicators are approached.
The general idea is that in rural areas, even in those affected by earthquakes, an acceptable vulnerability of buildings with a minimum transfer of knowledge in the local community can be maintained, but found solutions to improve behavior in case of seismic action should be taken into account.
