A specific feature of thermal power plants (TPP) is the multivariate nature of their intense technogenic impact on the environment, including pollution of air, environmental waters, soils, as well as disturbance of the geologic environment. Besides, TPPs cause thermal, radiation, noise and electromagnetic pollution; they also induce physical littering of the terrain and problems associated with storage of ash waste. Due to the reasons stated above, a comprehensive study of environmental damage zones caused by TPP operation is needed. Identification of spatial scales of technogenic impact zones (TIZ) are of considerable interest at pre-design stages of TPP construction. Despite the fact that it is important to integrate the factors of complex technogenic impact of TPP, the relevant issues have not been adequately classified and studied so far. This research is aimed at developing a concept of TIZ caused by TPP operation and identifying its spatial scales. Methodically, the research is based on analysis of results of the engineering-environmental surveys performed at various TPP sites and data obtained at comparable projects. It is demonstrated that selection of the area for geoecological investigations on the basis of TPP TIZ consideration makes it possible to get a more adequate view on the current state of the environment than it would be for selection using the "zones of influence" approach.
