Geographically, the studied area is located in the north-central part of Valcea county, including the piedmont and mountain area of the Capatanii Mountains and also a part of the hilly region of the Oltenia Subcarpathians, including the forests located in the upper basin of the Govora river. By phyto-climatic point of view the forests of this area belong at two categories: F.M.1 + F.D.4 ? mountain-piedmont area of beech and F.D.3 ?hilly evergreen beech area and beech-sessil oak area. The researches were made in thefollowing forest basins: Dobriceni, Jgheaburi ?i Popesti.
These forests extend over an area: 701.55 ha. The soil types that develop forest vegetation are: 01 Litosoil (LS) - Skeletal 0104, 32 districambosoil (DC)- and Luvosoil (LV). The following forest habitats types have been noticed in the studied area: 91V0 Dacian Beech forests (Symphyto-Fagion), CLAS. PAL.: 41.1D2; 9110 Luzulo-Fagetum beech forests, CLAS. PAL.: 41.11; 9130 Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests, CLAS. PAL.: 41.13; 91E0* Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae), CLAS. PAL.: 44.3, 44.2 ?i 44.13; 9170 Galio-Carpinetum oak hornbeam forests, CLAS. PAL.: 41.261, 41.262. They are habitats of conservative interest according to the Interpretation manual of the European Union habitats - Eur 27 and the Romanian Manual for Interpretation of Natura 2000 habitats in Romania (2008) [2] [3].
