Lowering energy consumption in the residential sector is one of the main priorities in the European Union. This can be achieved by increasing the thermal insulation of the buildings and using renewable sources for energy. One of the most common solutions is the use of heat pumps to produce thermal energy for heating / cooling indoor spaces and for domestic hot water. The geothermal heat pumps are used, but with increased efficiency of air/water heat pumps, they become effective solutions. This work studies the efficiency of air/water heat pumps for residential buildings located in different climatic zones of Romania. Heat loss calculations were carried out for the selected buildings to ensure the correct heat pump was selected. The heat pumps provided a environmental friendly solution for the building indoor climatic requirements which were achieved by using state of the art technology. In the end we were able to determine that the air source heat pump systems represent an economic and reliable technology.
