Carrion beetles of genus Thantophilus are an important part of the North Hemisphere ecosystems. They provide valuable ecosystem services by promoting nutrient cycling and biological control of pests. They also regularly occurs on human remains and some of them are established forensic bio-indicators as they could provide valuable information regarding time of death and possible body manipulation. Thanatophilus sinuatus is one of the most common species of necrophagous beetles in the Czech Republic and our goal was to model the possible distribution using advanced statistical methods as a cost effective tool for mapping its presence across the whole country. The study was based on random observations of the species in the Czech Republic and other Central European countries (e.g. Germany, Slovakia, Austria and Poland). The data of occurrence were coupled with local environmental factors (e.g. temperature, precipitation, seasonality, etc.). These data were evaluated by machine learning algorithm MaxEnt and extrapolated to provide the probability of occurrence across the Czech Republic. Based on this extrapolation we show in the article where we could expect T. sinuatus to occur and we further discuss, which environmental factors are correlated with the distribution of this specie.
