New innovative smart adaptive materials and optical measurement system can be implemented in civil engineering. Smart materials can be especially used in cased where fast and efficient way of reduced vibrations, weight and deflections is required. The essence of the solution is to introduce FBG sensors into the structure to make them act as its ?nervous system?. The system may be implemented in existing civil engineering structures made of steel, concrete, reinforced concrete, as well as in shells and new structures at the design stage. In order to reduce the large deformation of the footbridge, new material has been proposed. It consist of roads made of carbon fiber and a special system of compresion which is dependent of deflection of the footbridge that is measured by an optical system. The pre-element is a actuator made by alloy with shape memory (Flexinol) with optical system control. This material that, despite its small size can transfer a lot of power to the whole system. Two models were built, which show practical possibilities for reducing deformations in construction structures.
