Energy efficiency, in building industry, is one of the most important criteria for the selection of the material, the type of construction or the technology of construction. Not only is the amount of energy consumed by the building during its use is taken into account. The amount of energy needed to extract, process all materials used in it, the consumption during construction process and after it, energy expenditure on demolition or the reuse of preserved components are also important.
Prefabrication is a process that aims to make the most efficient use of resources and energy. On the other hand, concrete is a material that until recently was mainly valued for its structural qualities and now also aesthetic. It also has numerous properties that allow to reduce the energy consumption during use of the building. Combining the advantages of prefabrication and concrete in construction is not a novelty. However, the rapid development and growing sustainability standards, force architects to develop new measures that will meet requirements.
The main purpose of the research is to determine the potential of prefabricated concrete fa?ades in multi-family housing, used in order to reduce the energy consumption of the construction process, its period of use, possible modernization and demolition. The research was carried out in both issues - the possibilities offered by the material itself, when plays a constructive and finishing role, and in term of production technology, which has changed rapidly in recent years.
The following methods were used in research:
- historical-interpretative method - study of multi-family residential objects documentation based on literature research, comparative analysis, object viewing, photography, orientation measurement.
- logical argumentation method (based on analysis and synthesis) - logical interpretation,
- case studies - examination of objects with respect to selected criteria such as energy consumption, environmental impact, comfort, structure technology.
As a result of research a spectrum of measures has been developed. These measures are used by architects in the design of modern residential buildings and in modernization of existing ones to meet the current energy-efficient standards.
