Based on the environmental minimum criteria that have just been introduced in Italian legislation, new constructions should consider the environmental impact of used building products by calculating the degree of disassemblability and recyclability. How much will today's Italian buildings be disassembled? What is the degree of recyclability of the used materials?
The paper introduces a new instrument, called environmental quantity survey which cares cost aspects but also those who will directly impact on the environment at the end of the useful life of the construction.
How weigh our "traditional" Italian constructions? Do they respect the actual environmental rules or not? Is there a relationship between cost and weight, as well as between cost and constructive technique? May the use of recycled materials in the construction process has positive impacts in the deconstruction process? Are there more virtuous technical solutions that are not necessarily even more expensive?
The paper applies the method to a regional case study recently constructed for residential use, concluded a few months before the introduction of the national environmental standard, showing in particular how and if the construction complies with the requirements currently in force.
