The Laptev Sea region is one of the most interesting because it is a transition zone between the spreading Gakkel ridge and the structures of the continental margin of the Northern Eurasia. Nevertheless, the region is relatively little studied, leaving many questions open concerning its seismic and geodynamic characteristics.
The purpose of the paper is an introduction into the Laptev Sea region seismicity, seismotectonic and geodynamic characteristics including short overview of local overland and offshore instrumental studies. Local seismic networks studies are crucial for a whole complex of tasks including clarifying the features of the seismic regime, identifying seismically active faults, describing the stress state of the earth's crust and so on. Since 2016, the group of German and Russian scientists started series of temporary deployments of the local overland and bottom seismic networks in the Laptev Sea region. The unique seismic records obtained during these experiments should increase understanding seismic and geodynamic processes in the region. |
