Nowadays, the energy sector of any country is confronted with many urgent problems. This is due to the fact that this sector, like others, it works mainly on a heritage of the past (conventional sources of energy). The aim of this paper is to analyze the economic aspects of extracting clean energy in Romania. In this scope, a comprehensive analysis of the wind potential in parallel with the economic potential is conducted. For the wind analysis a data set that covers a 30-year interval (01 January 1989 to 31 December 2018) is processed. This data set is available on the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) servers and contains data for the zonal (U) and the meridional (V) wind velocity at 10-meter height (U10) at various resolutions. The results presented in this paper provides a comprehensive picture regarding the pattern of the wind speed and also the profitability. By analyzing the cost to generate power (CGP), the fixed charge rate (FCR), the annual energy production (AEP), the levelized replacement cost (LRC), the cost for operations and maintenance (O&M), the land lease cost (LLC), annual expense (TAE) and others, new zones for implementing wind farms on the Romania territory are revealed.
