The paper considers the formation and development of modern ideas in the field of mathematical modeling of the interaction of ferromagnetic particles and external magnetic fields in mineral processing. The implementation of such studies is dictated by the need to identify methods for the analytical representation of the physical laws of the aggregation of ferromagnetic particles, which are a basis for the various technological equipment used in the iron ores processing. The identification is aimed at the use of individual methods or their combination in the simulation of the magnetic separation process. Ferromagnetic particles in multiphase flows of iron ore processing flowsheets are characterized by volumetric magnetic susceptibility, magnetic moment and coercive force. These properties determine the physical principles underlying the operation of technological equipment and consisting in the impact of external magnetic fields on the flows of suspensions of ferromagnetic particles with different concentrations. In the case when the external magnetic field is homogeneous, such an impact leads, firstly, to the appearance of magnetization of ferromagnetic particles, if they were not previously in other magnetic fields, or to its growth, if the particles were previously exposed to them; and also, second, to ordering the orientation of the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic particles of the suspension along the field lines of the field. In the case when the external magnetic field is inhomogeneous, i.e. if a field gradient occurs, the two effects mentioned are supplemented by the bulk magnetic force, which leads to the movement of ferromagnetic particles in the direction of the pole of the magnetic system. From the point of view of the mineral beneficiation, the most important result of the effects of the interaction of ferromagnetic particles suspension and external magnetic fields is the particle-acquired and to a certain extent controlled tendency toward the formation of aggregates. The prediction of kinetics of the ferromagnetic particles aggregation and the physical properties of the formed aggregates, such as particle size, density, form factor, deposition rate in a gravitational field, as functions of medium parameters and external magnetic fields, were used to develop simulation models of magnetic separation processes in strong, weak, uniform and inhomogeneous magnetic fields, magnetic deslaminators and filters.
