The river is the consequential landscape ? forming element as it is rinsing and transporting the weakest rocks, scraping the bed and accumulating the sediment. During these processes in the river, diverse ecosystems are forming in various areas that provide habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species. In almost every river there is occurring a natural process as erosion. River erosion assessment should be considered in river management and included in management measures, as erosion can be determining factor in the loss of owned land, damage to adjacent structures and various types of the river bed and floodplain changes. Investigation of riverbank erosion and changes in the bedrock is important in river basin areas subject to land-use changes associated with rapid urbanisation, also resulting in hydromorphological changes in river flow. The study aimed to investigate the erosion rates, to observe and document the erosion sites in the River Svete in Latvia, in Jelgava parish. In the study, there are determined the causes of erosion and given recommendations and possible solutions to decrease the erosion in the most endangered areas in River Svete. The results of the study show that erosion in the River Svete in most cases is caused by the direct exposure to the wind, anthropogenic impact and the lack of vegetation on the bank of the river. Erosion processes in the River Svete could be significantly limited by shore reinforcement and maintenance, as well as restoration of vegetation that would protect the topsoil rock material from leaching.
