In the last years, Romania has suffered large-scale flooding with large areas of land affected by floods, causing major infrastructure damage and leaving behind a significant number of deaths.
Climate change and the high frequency of dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena manifested by torrential rains of special intensity produce flash-flood on watercourses due to the rapid concentration of leakage on slopes. These phenomena characterize the vast majority of river basins in Galati County.
The pilot area chosen for this research is the Suhu river, a left-side tributary of the Siret River, situated in the southeast of Romania.
There is currently a significant clogging of the river bed of most watercourses, which has the main effect of reducing the transport capacity and produces frequent discharge from the minor water bed under high water conditions. The main cause of excessive clogging of the river is the destruction of works to combat surface erosion of the soil, which equipped all the slopes of the river basins related to the watercourses.
The hydrotechnical works performed on the watercourses will ensure the transit of floods on the watercourses in safe conditions, without causing material damages or loss of human lives, while eliminating the expenses with the restoration of social-economic objectives, households, street roads, communications routes, hydrotechnical constructions, bridges, and agricultural crops affected by floods.
